Tree Pruning

Pruning is the most common maintenance procedure performed on trees, and each cut has the potential to change the tree forever. It takes several years of classroom and hands-on training to become a skilled and proficient pruning technician. Our field arborists are trained to prune in accordance with the ANSI standards, but all have to be accountable to the critical eye of the owner, Chuck Schiek. Mature trees require pruning to remove deadwood or dying branches to maintain the safety and health of the tree. Pruning to thin the canopy (to remove live branches) is only done when the tree's canopy is too dense or heavy. When crown thinning is required, live branch removal is concentrated on the outer portions of the canopy, leaving as much of the live interior branches as possible. Our certified arborists are trained to determine what type of pruning will best suit your trees as well as your needs.

Soil Health

Fertilization programs can be very beneficial in maintaining tree health. If not replenished, macro- and micronutrients can be leached through the soil or can be used up by trees, shrubs, and turf. Overfertilization or fertilization, when unnecessary, can be damaging to your plants or simply wasteful. Our certified arborists are trained to recognize nutrient deficiencies, we have a licensed agronomist to call on, and we utilize soil test laboratories when conditions dictate. The Urban Arborist team can determine how, why, and when your plants need to be fertilized.

Soil Biology

An ideal soil comprises 50% soil, 25% macropore space, and 25% micropore space. Living within the soil are millions of microorganisms, including vertebrates, earthworms, nematodes, arthropods, fungi, protozoa, and bacteria, all of which play an essential role in the soil food web and are absolutely essential in providing our plants with the moisture and nutrients they require. Urban Arborist has been utilizing the power of beneficial biologicals by introducing them into the soil for over a decade now, and the results speak for themselves.

Mulching

There can be a strong argument made that proper mulching is the single most important cultural practice that a homeowner can do for their trees. Mulching can reduce injury to your trees by creating a buffer zone to keep machinery away from the stem and base of the tree. When properly done, mulching will improve your tree's root system by maintaining a more consistent soil temperature, retaining moisture, and encouraging microorganism activity over time. There are some simple dos and don’ts to follow, which we would be happy to discuss with you.
